Growing up in the projects of New York, I never fully grasped the profound impact my mother, Eloise, would have on my life and career. Her love was fierce, and her discipline was unyielding — but don't mistake her strictness for cruelty. It was born from a deep well of love and a burning desire to see her children succeed in a world that often seemed stacked against us.
"When you know better, you do better." These words became a mantra that has guided me throughout my life and career — a philosophy I now share with every buyer and seller I work with. When I sit across from a client struggling with a difficult property sale, I channel my mother's unwavering support. I become their rock, their advocate, their ally.
Eloise worked tirelessly as a cleaning lady in Manhattan, scrubbing floors and tidying homes to help support our family. Her work ethic was nothing short of inspirational. The values of love, discipline, and commitment that she instilled in me are the guiding principles of every client relationship I build today.
My father, William, was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes. He taught me the power of presence — of showing up every day for your family, your work, and your commitments. In our neighborhood, a present and engaged father was something of an anomaly. His commitment to family wasn't just about physical presence; it was a deep-seated dedication that weathered all storms.
Pop would come home covered in oil and grease from his job with the New York transit system. He eventually became one of the first Black superintendents in that system — a testament to his work ethic and determination. He showed me that true success isn't about avoiding getting your hands dirty; it's about the pride you take in your work, no matter what it is.
Perhaps the most important lesson I learned from my father was how to lead with love. Behind his tough exterior was a heart of gold. He showed me that true authority comes not from intimidation but from care and commitment. That's how I approach every client relationship — with genuine care for your dreams and unwavering commitment to your success.
Life has a funny way of leading us down unexpected paths. My journey into real estate wasn't a straight line — it was a winding road filled with unexpected turns and valuable lessons. Even as a police officer in New York City, living in a condo with my wife Loana, the dream of a house with a yard never left me. To me, a house represented stability, a foundation for my family's future.
When an injury led to my retirement from the NYPD, we made the decision to move to Virginia, where we finally bought our first house. The experience was transformative. I began to see the abandoned buildings in my new city not as decay, but as opportunity. Where others saw problems, I saw potential — a skill that would become one of my greatest strengths as a realtor.
In 2004, while still working night shifts as a police officer, I enrolled in real estate school. The skills I honed as a cop — attention to detail, calm under pressure, commitment to integrity — proved invaluable. My job isn't just to sell you a house. It's to protect your interests, to guide you through this process safely and successfully.
There's a special kind of joy that comes from helping someone purchase their first home — a feeling that never gets old, no matter how many times I experience it. My passion for first-time homebuyers stems from my own experience. I still vividly remember the day Loana and I bought our first house in Virginia. That sense of pride, accomplishment, and stability was indescribable.
When you work with me as a first-time homebuyer, you're not just getting a realtor — you're getting a partner, a guide, and an advocate. My process starts with getting your credit right, creating a solid financial plan, and building a personalized roadmap together. I even teach a first-time homebuyer's course right here in Virginia.
My goal isn't just to help you buy a house. It's to create what I call a "no-regrets zone" — ensuring that years down the line, you'll look back on your decision with satisfaction, not regret. I'll always tell you the truth, even if it's not what you want to hear, because in the end, your long-term happiness is what matters most.
Family isn't just a word to me — it's the core of everything I do, including my work in real estate. I met Loana in high school at the tender age of 16. Little did I know then that this bright-eyed girl would become not just my wife, but my rock, my inspiration, and my partner in all of life's adventures. We've been together ever since, weathering life's storms and celebrating its joys hand in hand for over 30 years.
Loana's influence on my life and career cannot be overstated. As a breast cancer survivor and registered nurse, she embodies strength, resilience, and compassion. Her battle with cancer showed me what it means to face adversity with grace and determination — lessons I carry with me every day in my real estate practice.
My daughters Nakea and Dana have been my greatest teachers. They've shown me new perspectives, challenged me to grow, and inspired me to create a legacy that goes beyond financial success. My vision for Freeman Realty goes beyond growing the business — I want to create something that will serve our community for generations to come.
Throughout my journey, from the projects of New York to becoming a successful realtor, I've learned invaluable lessons that form the core of my approach. These 12 principles are my promise to you:
1. Unconditional love and unwavering support are the foundations of success. 2. Hard work and discipline are non-negotiable. 3. See it through — commitment and perseverance overcome every obstacle. 4. Lead with genuine care to create lasting relationships. 5. Honesty and transparency build trust and informed decisions.
6. Education and empowerment create long-term success. 7. See potential where others see problems — hidden gems exist everywhere. 8. Financial literacy and smart planning build generational wealth. 9. Take calculated risks and follow your passion. 10. Manage expectations for a smooth experience. 11. Build a strong professional network for comprehensive care. 12. Create a "no-regrets zone" by focusing on long-term satisfaction.
